    Throwback Thursday, the Series.

While digging through my closets for a yard sale I found a box. A veritable tbt treasure trove filled with superhero drawings from a long-ass time ago. Some of them are characters I’ve gone on to draw professionally, some… well, you’ll see.

Every Thursday I’m going to pull one of them out and assess, deconstruct, and annotate it, perhaps you’ll come along on the journey.

    This week we have…

    Spider-man!

Right off the bat, I’m struck by the moody, night time lighting. Turning reds purpley under moonlight is a trick I’ve employed quite a bit in my professional life (and it’s one I want to try on Spidey, now.) I mean, I probably just ate the red crayon, but cooler color palettes and tweaking signature colors is a thing I still do.

And what is up with the Daily Bugle Sign?? This Spidey is working for the Daily Captcha. ECLUBRN? This is the pre-literate toddler equivalent of white people throwing random Asian lettering in the background to make a scene all cool and cyberpunk and have no fucking idea what they’re actually spelling out.

A final note is the entrance to the ECLUBRN building, which J, Jonah Jameson had flown over from Smurf Forest.

And below it we have my Spider-Man: The Clone Saga Redux cover from 2009, one of two times I’ve drawn Spidey professionally. It’s interesting (to me anyway) that they both feature a left-handed Spidey and a dominant monolithic skyscraper in the frame.

Come back next week! It’s a big box…

Ms Marvel -A noble spirit embiggens the smallest woman-
Small Ms Marvel/The Simpsons piece I did after finishing up the 6th issue.  It’s been sitting on my mind since I read the 2nd issue’s script and the word ‘disembiggen’ brought back memories of the Jebediah Springfield quote.
"Embiggens? I never heard that word before I moved to Springfield…"

One more thing I’m working on for Fan Expo, the pencils for a Sailor Moon pinup. Inking it as we speak. This is my first time drawing them so it’s been fun but kinda stressful :)

New Warriors #1 some process shots from pencils to inks on pages 15 and 16. my pencils are pretty loose, usually just for structure, the rest of the details I do in the inking stage. A lot of times I have an idea in my head and I think it through in the pencils stage what I have to put down and what I can do right from the inks.

I’ve been bad about posting anything lately, i apologize. I’m gonna try to do more of the process shots and commissions soon.

Some process shots of New Warriors 2. I really really enjoy drawing Water Snake, I really want to make her into an action star.

Making up for my lack of updates with a double post. Here’s the cover to the the last issue of the Icarus storyline. I’m really enjoying working on these covers, love experimenting with simplified color palettes. Detective 34 will be on the stands in July.

FEARLESS FUTURE vol. 1 & 2 Kickstarter"We perfected the world… but did we change it?"40+ Pages of SciFi Short Story goodness from FanBros Originals.  Last year FanBros hosted a collection of futuristic tales by a variety of creators.  Many of them are already complete and ready for viewing but this kickstarter is to get the collection into book form.
I was one of the volume 1 artists with the story YES YOU CAN by writer Dallas Penn and I’m happy to be a part of this.
