Jim Henson’s The Musical Monsters of Turkey Hollow
Written by Jerry Juhl Adapted by Roger Langridge Coloured by Me!

Posting this on Canadian Thanksgiving seems appropriate.  The book is an adapatation of what was to be a Jim Henson Thanksgiving TV special written by Jerry Juhl in 1968!  It went unproduced until Boom!/Archaia worked with the Henson Company and Roger Langridge to produced the graphic novel version you see here.  Mr. Juhl wrote my childhood favourite holiday special, the Muppets Family Christmas, so I am very happy to be a part of this and provide the colours to Roger’s amazing work.  Thanks goes out to Roger, Jul, Cameron, Tay, Irene, Scott and Stephen!

A proper preview can be found HERE.  Should be available at most book stores and Amazon.  It’s a beautiful hardcover and makes a great all-ages read.  Plus, how can you say ‘no’ to turkeys that look like that?

Brok Windsor Kickstarter
Illustration I did to go along with the Brok Windsor Kickstarter, He’s a big guy!
"Brok Windsor was a doctor who discovered a secret land called Chaqua hiding in the midst of the Canadian wilderness during a normal canoeing trip. Here he was infected by the island and grew to the size of a giant, matching the height of the residents, a futuristic aboriginal tribe cut off from the rest of society. He spent months in this land battling man-eating lions, giant rats, and more bizarre oddities with the aid of his new friend Torgon. He even found a girlfriend, the giantess Starra who returned with him to Canada after several adventures."

The third artist submission for Brok Windsor!

    Throwback Thursday, the Series.

While digging through my closets for a yard sale I found a box. A veritable tbt treasure trove filled with superhero drawings from a long-ass time ago. Some of them are characters I’ve gone on to draw professionally, some… well, you’ll see.

Every Thursday I’m going to pull one of them out and assess, deconstruct, and annotate it, perhaps you’ll come along on the journey.

    This week we have…

First Look! Gal Godot in costume!!

    Not.

    It’s Wonder Woman!

I like the dollop of shaving cream she’s sporting on her head. Or maybe that’s a Smurf hat?? Smurfs were hot shit around this time.

Also of note: Is that a plastic bag over her right hand? Sort of a prescient pre-CSI accessory to ensure any trace evidence found under her nails remains uncontaminated.

Looks like I’ve tweaked her costume a bit and given her a Kingdom Come-esque loincloth, or maybe I haven’t quite gotten into the groove with crotches yet. Or maybe Wonder Woman has a secret. That said, whatever anatomical foibles I’m still working out at this stage, I’ve definitely got the hourglass down.

I’ve never actually drawn Wonder Woman professionally. But I did draw a JLA one-shot where everyone’s genders were swapped called *deep breath* Countdown: The Search for Ray Palmer: Superwoman & Batwoman. I had to design a Wonder Man (from Manazon Island) for that. I made him as broad and swarthy and hairy as possible. It perhaps looks more like this early drawing than any actual illustration of Diana would.

Come back next week! It’s a big box…

    This week we have…

    Spider-man!

Right off the bat, I’m struck by the moody, night time lighting. Turning reds purpley under moonlight is a trick I’ve employed quite a bit in my professional life (and it’s one I want to try on Spidey, now.) I mean, I probably just ate the red crayon, but cooler color palettes and tweaking signature colors is a thing I still do.

And what is up with the Daily Bugle Sign?? This Spidey is working for the Daily Captcha. ECLUBRN? This is the pre-literate toddler equivalent of white people throwing random Asian lettering in the background to make a scene all cool and cyberpunk and have no fucking idea what they’re actually spelling out.

A final note is the entrance to the ECLUBRN building, which J, Jonah Jameson had flown over from Smurf Forest.

And below it we have my Spider-Man: The Clone Saga Redux cover from 2009, one of two times I’ve drawn Spidey professionally. It’s interesting (to me anyway) that they both feature a left-handed Spidey and a dominant monolithic skyscraper in the frame.

Come back next week! It’s a big box…

Ms Marvel -A noble spirit embiggens the smallest woman-
Small Ms Marvel/The Simpsons piece I did after finishing up the 6th issue.  It’s been sitting on my mind since I read the 2nd issue’s script and the word ‘disembiggen’ brought back memories of the Jebediah Springfield quote.
"Embiggens? I never heard that word before I moved to Springfield…"

One more thing I’m working on for Fan Expo, the pencils for a Sailor Moon pinup. Inking it as we speak. This is my first time drawing them so it’s been fun but kinda stressful :)
